UCSD Computer Programmers to Represent U.S. at World Finals in China
December 1, 2004
Three computer science students from UCSD will be among the teams representing the United States at the 29th ACM International Collegiate Programming Contest World Finals in Shanghai, China, next April. The wild-card slot was awarded after the UCSD team's strong runner-up finish at the Southern California regional finals. Full Story
UCSD Shakes 70-Ft.-Tall Wind Turbine In Real-Time Earthquake Demonstration of World's First Outdoor Shake Table

A 70-ft.-tall, 23,400-lb. wind turbine shook and shivered while it was subjected to historical ground motions from the 1992 magnitude 7.3 Landers earthquake, as the University of California, San Diego (UCSD) Jacobs School of Engineering today demonstrated the unique capabilities of the world’s first outdoor shake table for testing full-scale buildings and structures. Student Research Benefits from DPAC Technologies Deal with Cal-(IT)2

UCSD Computer Security Expert: Touch-Screen Voting Machine Concerns Persist

A computer security expert at the University of California, San Diego who has analyzed the software of one of the most popular touch-screen voting machines says election officials should regard any touch-screen machine that operates suspiciously on Tuesday as part of a “crime scene” to be investigated by computer forensics experts. CSE Graduate Students Take Top Two Spots in UCSD Programming Contest

First-year graduate students in Computer Science and Engineering took the top two spots in UCSD's annual ACM Programming Contest on Saturday, Oct. 16. Michael Vrable and Chris Chang each solved all six problems, and are guaranteed positions on one of the four UCSD teams to compete Nov. 13 in the Southern California ACM Collegiate Programming regional contest. UCSD Bioengineering Professor Wins 2004 Packard Foundation Fellowship

The David and Lucile Packard Foundation has named Trey Ideker, an assistant professor at UCSD’s Jacobs School of Engineering, as one of this year’s 16 recipients of the Packard Fellowships for Science and Engineering. Ideker and each of the other fellows will receive unrestricted research grants of $625,000 over five years. Full Story
UCSD Undergraduates Showcase Research Findings from Cyber Infrastructure Projects in Asia, Australia

Eight students participating in UCSD's inaugural Pacific Rim Undergraduate Experiences (PRIME) program recently presented the results of their research projects, and talked about the value of the experience to undergraduates in science, engineering and other disciplines at UCSD. The undergraduates - all enrolled in the Jacobs School - worked specifically on research projects related to the development and deployment of cyberinfrastructure on both sides of the Pacific Ocean. The PRIME program is funded by the National Science Foundation, with additional support from UCSD and the California Institute for Telecommunications and Information Technology [Cal-(IT)2]. Thirty Years Later, Computer Scientists Who Popularized Early PC Language Return to UCSD Pascal's Birthplace

Dozens of alumni who worked on a ground-breaking language for what would later be called the personal computer will gather at UCSD on Oct. 22 to mark the 30th anniversary of the computer language. The UCSD Pascal Reunion Symposium will take place from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. in the Price Center Ballroom on the UCSD campus in La Jolla, CA, and is organized by UCSD's Jacobs School of Engineering and its Computer Science and Engineering (CSE) department. California Scientists Wage Joint War on Internet Plagues

The NSF has awarded $6.2 million under the Cyber Trust program to create a new Center for Internet Epidemiology and Defenses (CIED). The project is led by Computer Science and Engineering professor Stefan Savage, with the research to be carried out jointly with the International Computer Science Institute (ICSI), a UC Berkeley affiliate. CIED will develop technologies to detect, analyze and defend against large-scale Internet attacks. Full Story
Undergraduates Report Results of Summer Research in Asia, Australia

Nine students participating in UCSD's inaugural Pacific Rim Undergraduate Experiences (PRIME) program -- all of them Jacobs School students -- are now back in San Diego after summer internships at major research institutions in Asia and Australia. On Friday, September 17, they will present the results of their research projects, and talk about the value of the experience to undergraduates in science, engineering and other discipilnes at UCSD. Jacobs Undergraduates Post Fast Time in Human Powered Submarine Contest
August 4, 2004
A team of engineering students from the University of California, San Diego posted the top speed in the one-person submarine category at the 2004 Human Powered Submarine Contest held July 28 through Aug. 1 in Escondido, CA. The UCSD students, undergraduates enrolled in the Jacobs School of Engineering, pedaled their fluorescent green submarine to a top speed of 6.035 miles per hour. Full Story
UCSD Undergraduates Participate in Collaborative Studies Abroad on Cyberinfrastructure

Nine undergraduate students from the UCSD Jacobs School of Engineering have arrived in Asia and Australia to conduct collaborative research on a wide variety of topics related to cyberinfrastructure. They are part of a new Pacific Rim Undergraduate Experiences (PRIME) program funded by the NSF. This summer's host institutions are in Osaka, Japan; Hsinchu and Taipei, Taiwan; and Melbourne, Australia. Full Story
Computer Science Undergraduates Complete Multiplayer, Online Games

Earlier this month, five teams of Computer Science and Engineering (CSE) students showcased their respective online, multiplayer games to a packed audience in Peterson Hall on the UCSD campus. The games were part of CSE 125, a project-based course on Software System Design and Implementation, taught each spring by CSE professor Geoff Voelker. Full Story
UCSD Students to Provide Technology Solutions for San Diego Community Organizations

San Diego, CA June 15, 2004-- UCSD undergraduate students will put their technical and creative skills to work for San Diego non-profit organizations through a new program being launched by the Jacobs School. Through the UCSD Teams in Engineering Service (TIES), multi-disciplinary teams of UCSD students will design, build and deploy projects that solve technology-based problems for local community organizations. CSE Undergraduates Simma and Dorsett Win Spring 2004 Programming Contest
May 4, 2004
Computer Science and Engineering seniors Alex Simma and Stefan Dorsett bested more than 120 other students who showed up on May 1 to compete in a software version of the BattleBot contest. They edged out the team of James Heffron and Gunny Lee for the top spot and prize money of $1,000 apiece. Full Story
