History of the Jacobs School Scholarship

The Jacobs School Scholars program was established in 2000 by Dr. Irwin Mark Jacobs and Mrs. Joan Klein Jacobs to help the Jacobs School recruit the most talented undergraduate and graduate students.Ìý Today close to 100 alumni of the Jacobs School Scholars Program are connected to the Jacobs School and each other, forming a strong network of young engineering leaders.

How was I selected to become a Jacobs School Scholar?

A committee of faculty review top-tier applicants and make recommendations based on demonstrated academic achievement, demonstrated leadership, commitment to community, and innovative potential.

What does the Jacobs School Scholarship cover?

The Jacobs School Scholarship will apply to the full California resident Cost of AttendanceÌý after all other grant and scholarship aid has been awarded. Non-California resident supplemental tuition fee will not be covered by the Jacobs Scholar award. Federal Pell Grants may be applied to out-of-state tuition cost of attendance if needed. Adjustments to housing status will impact the sum of the annual award. Additional costs beyond in-state tuition cost of attendance (ie. study abroad) will not be covered.

How does the guaranteed on-campus housing work?

Students must meet all housing deadlines and live on-campus continuously during the academic year to continue to receive guaranteed on-campus housing.

What are the requirements if I want to change my major?

Students can change their major within the Jacobs School of Engineering within their first two years, so long as they have a Cumulative GPA of 3.5 or higher.Ìý

Should one change their major to one that is outside of the Jacobs School of Engineering, one forgoes your scholarship.

Can I study abroad and still receive the scholarship?

Yes! However, additional costs beyond in-state tuition costs of attendance will not be covered by the Jacobs School Scholarship.

I am considering the BS+MS program. Will the scholarship cover this?

The scholarship covered up to four-years of undergraduates. Should you remain in coursework for over four years, or your status changes over to "Graduate," the scholarship will no longer apply.

What if I don't meet the 3.5 Cumulative GPA requirement?

We are aware that life happens, and that engineering curriculum can be tough at times! Should students be unable to make the GPA requirement at the end of the academic year, a notification will be sent out that their scholarship and participation within the program is at-risk. Students have the opportunity to appeal their scholarship status, which includes creating a success plan. All appeals are considered, but not guaranteed. Should a student not appeal by deadline, or have their appeal denied, will lose access to the Jacobs School Scholarship and Program.
