Learning through practice, problem-solving, and applying concepts.
"My peer educator really made us think about the steps and angles of developing a solution. At the same time, I was enrolled in an ECE course and my instructor for that course was having us think this way too. I’m realizing this is engineering and how engineers think about problems and solutions."

About Engineering Learning Communities
Engineering Learning Communities are formal study groups that bring engineering students into a supportive environment where they can develop confidence, strengthen study skills, and learn the value of collaborative study. This small academic environment seeks to increase student mastery and motivation by eliminating the intimidating large classes that engineering students experience particularly in the freshman year. Learning Communities at other institutions have proven effective in improving grades, motivation, and learning over the past 2 years.
What you can expect from the Engineering Learning Communities program:
Weekly 1 hour and 45 minute problem solving sessions with a Peer Educator.
Collaboration with other participants, teaching and learning from each other.
Tips and guidance on how to prepare for examinations, how to best study, and how to best use course books and materials.
Additional academic support through office hours held by each Peer Educator.
Read an article about the Engineering Learning Communities here.
Engineering Learning Communities are offered throughout the academic year to provide academic support for core engineering pre-requisite classes. Schedules vary each quarter in conjunction with Calculus/Physics/Chemistry courses offered.
Location of Learning Communities
The IDEA Engineering Learning Communities are typically held in Jacobs Hall B805, although some ELCs are held in other locations when needed.
To get to the IDEA Engineering Learning Communities, take the stairs from Warren Mall (closest to Bioengineering Building) to the Jacobs Hall basement courtyard, where main entrance to the IDEA Engineering Learning Communities is located.
Meet Our Peer Educators
Anson Añonuevo |Structural Engineering | Seventh College
Hi, my name is Anson Añonuevo and I'm a second year, Aerospace focused, Structural Engineer at Seventh College. I am currently a lead for the Seismic Design Team but I intend to pursue aerospace and specifically design composite structures for moon bases. I come from Concord in the Bay Area and enjoy skateboarding, tricking, and climbing. I take immense joy in helping others succeed in academia and am excited to be your peer educator for engineering classes! I am open to feedback because the main goal is to help you excel in your classes. Feel free to reach out to me with any questions regarding classes, major, or hobbies!

Fourth Manaanuntakul | Chemical Engineering | Warren College
Hi everyone! My name is Fourth, and I’m a first-year Chemical Engineering student from Warren College. I’m originally from Bangkok, Thailand but I’m loving the beach here in San Diego. I’m currently researching the optimization of Lithium Ion Battery Recycling and hope to join the sustainable energy industry after graduation. I enjoy listening to K-pop and watching Kdramas so feel free to reach out to me and discuss the best Kdrama ever. (Goblin or CLOY is obviously the only correct answer 🙈.) You can also occasionally find me at the gym or the badminton court and I’m always down for a friendly game. As a peer educator, I hope to be able to assist you both in and outside of the classroom. Whether that be going over class content, suggestions on the course schedule, or what’s the best place to eat on campus. If you have any questions, don’t hesitate to ask and I hope to see you soon at ELC!
Jamie Gatus | Bioengineering:Biotechnology | Seventh College
Hi! My name is Jamie, and I am a third year Bioengineering: Biotechnology student from Seventh College. I was born and raised in San Francisco, but San Diego has definitely grown on me! I love spending time outdoors and trying new places to eat with my friends and family. My goal in life is to help others, and with my knowledge in engineering, I hope to support communities and individuals alike lead healthy and sustainable lives. As a Peer Educator, I hope to be a resource to all of you in and beyond ELC's, so please feel free to ask me any questions you may have related to school, your career, or just life in general. Looking forward to meeting you all :)
Jordan Brazill | Structural Engineering | Warren College
Hey! My name is Jordan, and I'm a second year Structural Engineering student in Warren. I love my hometown of Las Vegas, Nevada, but I am definitely enjoying my time here in San Diego. In my free time, I like to play video games, jam on my bass with my band, go to the beach, and eat at some good restaurants with friends. Also, I help out at Seismic Outreach, a club that inspires younger kids to try out engineering. I have been tutoring students of all ages for more than 3 years now, and I am available to help anyone who needs it. Excited to see you at ELC!
Kaitlyn Lavarias | Mechanical Engineering| Warren College
Hello! My name is Kaitlyn and I’m a Mechanical Engineering major specializing in Controls and Robotics. I’m from Bakersfield, CA and I have three dogs back home that I miss very much (their names are Gizmo, Bolt, and Roxy <3). Outside of ELC, you might find me working with my Project in a Box people (a very cool engineering student org), doing haptics research in the Morimoto Lab, or triathlon training (running is my fav and I am atrociously slow at swimming, so if you have advice lmk lol). I am also a big fan of mint chip ice cream, taking naps, and trying new things. As a Peer Educator, I hope to create a welcoming environment for everyone to learn and connect with each other. Feel free to talk to me about anything whether it’s about class, research, life, or anything random that comes to mind. I’m looking forward to meeting all of you!
Mariana Gomez |Chemical Engineering | Muir College
