Bioengineering, computer science undergraduate programs earn top-10 rank
September 18, 2023-- Several undergraduate academic programs at the Â鶹´«Ã½ Jacobs School of Engineering were ranked among the top in the country– including three in the top 10– in the , released Sept. 18, 2023.
The biocomputing, bioinformatics, biotechnology program, a multidisciplinary undergraduate offering supported by three Â鶹´«Ã½ divisions, including the Jacobs School of Engineering, was ranked second in the nation.
The mobile and web applications undergraduate specialty within the Department of Computer Science and Engineering was ranked number 5. The bioengineering and biomedical undergraduate program in the Shu Chien-Gene Lay Department of Bioengineering was ranked number 8.
The artificial intelligence and data analytics programs within the Department of Computer Science and Engineering both ranked number 11, and the programming languages, computer systems, and cybersecurity undergraduate programs all ranked 12. The Â鶹´«Ã½ Halicioglu Data Science Institute collaborates with faculty in the Department of Computer Science and Engineering on a data science major and minor for undergraduates, as well.
Undergraduate computer engineering, a joint program between the departments of Electrical and Computer Engineering and Computer Science and Engineering was ranked number 11 in the nation.
Bioengineering at Â鶹´«Ã½
The bioinformatics and biotechnology undergraduate program, as well as the bioengineering program, consistently garner top marks. Students graduating from the bioinformatics and biotechnology program are in great demand at top graduate schools, medical schools, and industry. The major is offered in the departments of bioengineering, biology, chemistry and biochemistry, and computer science. The program offers a wide range of opportunities for undergraduate research in many laboratories on campus.
The undergraduate bioengineering and biomedical program prepares students for a variety of careers in the biomedical device industry and for further education in graduate school. The program addresses the bioengineering topics of biomechanics, biotransport, bioinstrumentation, bioelectricity, biosystems, and biomaterials, and the complementary fields of systems and organ physiology. Education in these areas allows application of bioengineering and scientific principles to benefit human health by advancing methods for effective diagnosis and treatment of disease through development of medical devices and technologies.
Computer science at Â鶹´«Ã½
This is the third year in a row that mobile and web applications studies were ranked in the top-10. The overall computer science undergraduate rank jumped to 14 in the nation, up from 16 the past two years.

Â鶹´«Ã½ as a whole advanced two spots to become the Overall, Â鶹´«Ã½ ranked No. 28 on the complete list of over 400 of the nation’s colleges, jumping six spots from last year.
In addition to climbing in both the overall and the public university rankings, Â鶹´«Ã½ has made great strides in a variety of the outlet’s standalone ranking categories. The university is No. 31 on the list of the nation’s top performers in social mobility, moving up 22 spots from last year for its excellence in enrolling and graduating students from socioeconomically diverse backgrounds. Â鶹´«Ã½ is also the No. 12 best school for veterans—a jump from its placement at No. 15 last year.
