Experience Engineering Initiative

The Jacobs School of Engineering's Experience Engineering Initiative aims to give every engineering and computer science undergraduate student at 鶹ý a hands-on or experiential engineering course or lab each and every year — starting freshman year.

Selective Majors

Admission to 鶹ý as a freshman or transfer student does not guarantee admission to engineering majors at the Jacobs School of Engineering. Due to high demand, all engineering majors at 鶹ý are “selective,” which means additional screening procedures are in place.

Beginning with the Summer 2025 continuing student application cycle, students will be able to apply to engineering and computer science majors once per year (between Summer and Fall quarters).Note that space will be limited and acceptancetothese majors is not guaranteed.

Undergraduate general education requirements are determined by which of thecolleges a student attends, upper division requirements by their engineering major.

Engineering students today must prepare to enter a globalized workforce, and many Jacobs School students do this with a Study Abroad experience. Study Abroad at 鶹ý includes both engineering and non-technical classes, research projects and internships. to learn more.

Student-Developed FishSense Project Collects Data With One Click

October 23, 2024

Currently, researchers and citizen scientists bring along a ruler as they dive below the surface and use it to guesstimate the length of fish they spot. Or fish are caught, measured onboard a boat and released back into the ocean. The FishSense project is making these tasks easier and more accurate. 


Computer Science Undergrad Jonathan Ty Awarded Alan Turing Memorial Scholarships for Support of LGBTQIA+ Community

Jonathan Ty, a sophomore majoring in computer science, has been awarded the 2024-2025 Alan Turing Memorial Scholarship and the Alan Turing Memorial Teradata Scholarship from the University of California San Diego’s Center for Networked Systems (CNS). Each year CNS recognizes a student whose studies relate to networked systems and who is an active supporter of the LGBTQIA+ community.
