Haiwen Luan

Assistant Professor, Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering

Mechanics guided assembly of 3D mesoscale structures; Bio-integrated electronics and microfluidics; Mechanics of programmable material systems.

Luan is a dedicated researcher committed to advancing mechanics-informed strategies to seamlessly integrate intelligent electronics and microfluidics into biological systems through bio-integrated multifunctional microsystems. His interdisciplinary approach combines experimental and theoretical/computational techniques to investigate fundamental and applied problems on various topics:

  • Mechanics-guided assembly of 3D mesoscale electronic and microfluidic structures as bio-interfaces
  • Mechanics and fabrication of bio-integrated stretchable and flexible electronics
  • Programmable and reconfigurable microsystems using mechanics-informed inverse design strategies

Emerging from his research, these microsystems harmonize intricate 3D geometries, soft and tissue-like mechanical properties, and mechanically programmable responses, offering an advanced platform for heightened sensing and regulation to address healthcare and medicine challenges.

Capsule Bio:

Haiwen Luan was formerly a postdoctoral scholar at Northwestern University’s Querrey Simpson Institute for Bioelectronics, collaborating with Prof. John A. Rogers. He earned his Ph.D. in mechanical engineering from Northwestern University in 2019 under the guidance of Prof. Yonggang Huang, receiving the Ted Belytschko Outstanding Research Award in the same year. Luan holds a master's degree in civil and environmental engineering, also from Northwestern University, and a bachelor's degree in civil engineering from Tongji University, China. He has co-authored over 60 peer-reviewed publications in journals such as Science Advances, Nature Biomedical Engineering, Nature Communications, Advanced Materials, Extreme Mechanics Letters, and the Journal of Applied Mechanics.
