Faculty Profiles
Sergei Krasheninnikov
Professor, Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering
Fusion energy and plasma physics.
Professor Krasheninnikov's areas of research include plasma turbulence and transport; atomic physics in plasmas; plasma-material interactions and the physics of materials of plasma facing components in fusion devices; laser-plasma interactions and generation of intense relativistic electron beams; gas discharge physics and plasma chemistry. His focus is on the understanding the physics of complex issues related to the fusion energy production by controlling plasma transport, improving plasma confinement, discovering ways to fully utilize the power produced, and implementation of plasma-related technologies in different applications in science and engineering.
Capsule Bio:
Sergei I. Krasheninnikov received his Ph.D. in 1980 and Doctor in Physics and Mathematics in 1992 from the Kurchatov Institute of Atomic Energy, Moscow, Russia. He held positions of Leading Scientist at Kurchatov Institute and Senior Scientist at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He joined the Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering (MAE) Department at 鶹ý in 1999 as a professor of engineering physics. Krasheninnikov is a Fellow of the American Physical Society and a recipient of the medal “Kurchatov’s Laureate”, and the 2021 Alfven Prize from the European Physical Society for his "Seminal contributions to the plasma physics of the scrape-off layer and divertor in magnetically confined fusion (MCF) experiments, including the physics of 'blobs,' divertor plasma detachment, and dust, together with atomic physics effects."
