Currently, researchers and citizen scientists bring along a ruler as they dive below the surface and use it to guesstimate the length of fish they spot. Or fish are caught, measured onboard a boat and released back into the ocean. The FishSense project is making these tasks easier and more accurate.

Jonathan Ty, a sophomore majoring in computer science, has been awarded the 2024-2025 Alan Turing Memorial Scholarship and the Alan Turing Memorial Teradata Scholarship from the University of California San Diego’s Center for Networked Systems (CNS). Each year CNS recognizes a student whose studies relate to networked systems and who is an active supporter of the LGBTQIA+ community.

Riyam Al Msari, an undergraduate bioengineering alumna from Iraq, is one of 30 recipients of the 2024 Paul & Daisy Soros Fellowship for New Americans. The merit-based program for immigrants and children of immigrants awards up to $90,000 to support each fellow’s graduate studies.

Â鶹´«Ã½ electrical engineering student Grecia Paola Siono Gutierrez has been named a , which recognizes exceptional undergraduate women and gender minorities in aerospace. Siono Gutierrez is the sixth recipient from the Jacobs School of Engineering in the eight-year history of the fellowship.
