Creating effective instruction manuals for construction tools in many languages geared to an audience with diverse literacy skills and social customs is extremely challenging. The team is charged to develop technical instructions for chemical anchor products used by workers on construction sites worldwide. Their goal will be to communicate the main product features, steps for installation and handling in a mode independent of written language. Start July 1st in Kaufering, Germany, and spend 5-6 weeks training at Hilti on the chemical anchoring products which will be used as the model for instruction. Special training will be given by Tanner AG, a leader in technical documentation, on their system of technical description and documentation. Team will draft an instructional concept by the end of this period. Testing and validation of the concept will take place in August at several construction sites in the US. Revision of the concept, presentation of results, and recommendations for further development to be given in September to Hilti and Tanner executives via videoconference from San Diego or Tulsa, OK (Hilti US HQ). A senior Hilti engineering manager will work with students during this final phase.

The Production Tools group is involved in taking existing test tools and new tools related to MediaFLO and turning them into production tools that can be used by handset OEM's; MediaFLO system operators; MediaFLO carriers; and MediaFLO test equipment vendors.
The Team will deal directly with end-use customers in a real pre-production, production, or operational environment. They will be exposed to the Agile software development methodology and learn to deliver functional and functionally tested software iterations in as little as two weeks. They would also be exposed to software architecture development that is ""designed for change"" and learn how to adapt software to evolving requirements. The Team would also learn how to develop unit tests early in the development cycle. Finally, the MediaFLO project and the tools being developed run the gamut from more tactile ""user experience"" focus, to embedded applications on a handset, to windows server applications.

The project deals with the comparison of various MediaFLO timing characteristics (setup time, channel switching, etc) when implemented with EVDO and UMTS (GSM and WCDMA) chipsets. Simultaneous testing will be performed on the EVDO and UMTS side, to determine the influence of the MediaFLO to the 3G solutions. The Team will identify the relevant parameters and then devise a strategy to measure them. Channel capacity differences and video quality also need to taken into account.
The Team will deal directly with network carrier related environment. The interns will learn how to use modern 3GPP equipment, including the real network base station that generates all call flows and other signaling messages; the real propagation environment, and 3GP phones and logging tools. The Team will learn the theory of the UMTS and EVDO, and how to read standard and equipment documentation, and see how it is implemented.

Analysis and programming is also needed to integrate multiple network architecture and modeling and simulation tools such as NetViz, Opnet, RTM, Visio, as well as to perform quantitative and statistical analysis to characterize C4ISR application network traffic and data.
