Cisco EnergyWise, enables companies to improve business energy use for an entire campus, a single building, and all the way down to the level of individual IP devices such as phones, laptops, and access points.

Life Technologies is seeking three students to work with senior engineers to design, build, program and test platforms for evaluating and benchmarking the ability of various hardware platforms to accelerate existinig and new algorithms used in DNA sequencing. These algorithms include the image processing and digital signal processing algorithms that are used in the primary analysis of raw signals produced by Next Generation Sequencing platforms. The results of this effort will be used to guide both the development of future instruments and algorithms.

0. Automated Repair Bushing Drawing GeneratorÌý-ÌýALL STUDENT OPENINGS HAVE BEEN FILLED
NAVAIR is seeking two interns to evaluate possible options and create a system that allows a user to rapidlly generate fully defined drawings of bushings by filling out a simple input form. Once all parameters are user defined, the program would create a unique code as well as the drawing and possibly also a table of manufacturing process steps, process codes, and references. The code thus generated could easily be transmitted to others who could run a decoder system to replicate the drawing from the code alone. The code could also be fed into a TBD translator program for NC machining. The ultimate goal is a bushing drawing management system that can be incorporated into our local manufacturing process.

SDG&E, a Sempra Energy company, is a gas and electric utility serving approximately two million customers in San Diego. Over the next few years, SDG&E will develop smart grid technologies that support small-scale, distributed, renewable resources that are owned either by the utility or by the consumer. The program refers to a transformation of all information and control systems improving the business operations through technology, and also supports the utility to modernize its grid. It includes deployment of a ubiquitous communication network that connects digital electric meters to the utility. The Smart Grid component of this program allows for intelligent design and control strategies for distributed generation, some of which will be renewable (i.e. photo-voltaic) and owned by the consumer.

The U.S. electric power infrastructure is a strategic national asset that is underutilized most of the time. With the proper changes in the operational paradigm, it could generate and deliver the necessary clean energy to achieve the states clean-air and renewable standards requirements. In doing so, it would reduce greenhouse gas emissions, improve the economics of the electricity industry, and reduce the U.S. dependency on fossil fuels. There are technical and economic impacts of using the existing idle capacity of the electric infrastructure in conjunction with the emerging storage and variable, renewable generation technologies to meet the majority of the daily energy needs of the U.S.

This project focuses on a conceptual design to integrate battery or other storage technologies into the variable distributed renewable generation portfolio. The project will lead to a reference design, patent(s) or both.

Areas of investigation in this project will include:

- Means of measuring variable renewable distributed generation (DG) types

- Means of planning storage (i.e. battery) types and discharging into both the consumers premise and into the grid

- Energy production into the grid must be governed by user preference and utility grid design or constraints

- Identify candidate storage manufacturer(s)

- The Smart Grid must recognize the downstream (consumer) technology capabilities

- Power generation charging and discharging may be controlled by energy prices

- Conceptual design must use existing utility communication infrastructure

- Leverage other SDG&E intellectual properties (last two years Intern project)

Deliverables will include technology assessment (technology viability, device design, and manufacturer acceptance), market assessment (market opportunity, customer preferences, subsidy requirements), and financial assessment (financial projections, capital requirements, operating costs).

0. SATA Based In-Line Media Encryption (IME)Ìý-ÌýALL STUDENT OPENINGS HAVE BEEN FILLED
There are two basic approaches to media encryption. Using SW, you can encrpyt at the OS or application layer. This is relatively inexpensive, but also the least secure. The other approach is to perform encryption in the media itself. This is more secure, but is less modular because it is done on a product by product basis.

We propose to develop a HW-based, in-line encryption service that would be separate from the application and the media, and take advantage of the unique qualities of the new SATA standard. Interns will develop and implement a proof of concept design that could be used in future ViaSat IME products. The goal will be to exploit the new advanced features of SATA and build a unique approach to full disk encryption.

ViaSat is seeking three students total for this project-- one computer science major and two electrical engineering majors.

The computer science major will be responsible for the front-end SW that would run on the PC to handle various aspects of the in-line encryption. May require Master Boo Record manipulation, modification of low level SATA drivers, control and access to low level SATA registers, and general high level control.

The electrical engineers will be repsponsible for FPGA design and modification of third-party SATA core to run on a third-pary demo board as well as implementation of encryption algorithm in FPGA and any high-level FPGA control required. Both students should have experience in FPGA design.

The goal of the Automated Metrics Collection Software project is to provide an easy method to collect basic metrics for programs by extracting data from multiple data repositories. It includes metrics collected on a periodic basis to help projects track progress as well as metrics collected upon completion of a project. Metrics will be extracted from DevTrack (Defect tracking), DOORS (requirements), and MPM (Financial Data). Lines of code count will also be calculated automatically and will require the software to interact with the RSM tool. The software will feature a web based interface for users to set up the various connections to the data repositories and contain the capability to create and display reports on the collected metrics.

Covario is seeking two additional team members for a specific summer technology initiative around test automation. The project team will integrate into the existing Agile process and within this context, work with the Software Quality Assurance team to propose and iteratively construct a test automation framework for the Marketing Action Platform. A System of Systems is a collection of task-oriented or dedicated systems that pool their resources and capabilities together to obtain a new, more complex, 'system' which offers increased functionality and performance than simply the sum of the constituent systems. The team is expected to continue to the development of the existing physical design of a modern Command, Control, Computers, Communications, and Information (C4I) and Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance (ISR) system of systems. This development entails the identification of equipment locations physically within a platform or site, identifying how each piece of equipment is connected to every other piece of equipment, and relating the physical information to program-defined part numbers and configuration items. Due to the complexity of the design, the team will investigate new ways to extract needed information from the design database in various reports required by the program engineers. In addition, the team will explore different ways of representing the system architecture using standard Department of Defense (DoD) Architecture Framework (DoDAF) views that can then be related to the existing physical design. The ultimate goal will be to develop a means of linking high level system requirements stored within one database to design elements developed and stored within a separate design database, allowing for the complete traceability of requirements to all levels of design.

Complete physical drawings for each platform and site on the program including: site layouts, equipment layouts, equipment cabinet configurations, physical interfaces between each piece of equipment including connector and cabling detail, and equipment identified by configuration number and part number. Northrop Grumman is seeking 3 students to participate in a research and development project to develop a working prototype for a fully distributed information management capability that leverages current Web 2.0 and services oriented architecture (SOA) technologies. Interns will be asked to work as a group to help design, implement, integrate, test, and document a software system for future deployment.

Desirable Skills:

- Prior work/internship experience

- Prior experience with web services, distributed systems, service oriented architectures, and/or component frameworks.
