We develop minimally disruptive, procedurally-integrated solutions for spine and beyond. Our mission is to improve the lives of patients who suffer from debilitating back, neck, or leg pain by creating cutting-edge products and procedures that revolutionize spine surgery.
1. Near-Net PEEK Bar Optimization- TIP-ALL STUDENT OPENINGS HAVE BEEN FILLED
A multivariable, geometrical optimization project with the goal of minimizing the amount of raw material waste during manufacturing of PEEK spinal interbody implants

NuVasive is an innovative global medical device company that is changing spine surgery with minimally disruptive surgical products and procedurally-integrated solutions for the spine. We are looking for a temp to join ourGlobal Implant Systems Product Development team to dive in an help with a short term project:

Perform geometrical optimizations of raw material, near-net extruded shapes to final products based on manufacturing constraints Perform mathematical analyses to optimize cost reduction of near-net extruded shapes based on financial input variables Create a computer model that outputs optimized extruded raw material shape based on specific input parameters

A few other helpful things to know:

Essentially, we’re currently machining a portion of ourrectangularcross-section implants out ofroundcross-section raw material (PEEK polymer) bars. Because we have thousands of implant sizes and shapes (due to varying patient anatomy and surgical procedures) and because there is a wide variety of annual sales volumes across those sizes, it’s not that simple for us to determine easily how we should change the round bar geometry to minimize material scrap during the machining. Unfortunately the scrap material CANNOT be melted down and reused due to FDA requirements so the goal is to change the round cross-section into a variety of different shapes that better match the implant cross-sections and reduce the material scrap during manufacturing. If I were a student, why would I want to take on this project: Because the money saved through this optimization exercise will funnel directly into new R&D innovation to help improve patients’ lives (if you look at our financial reports you’ll see that our company % spend on R&D is directly proportional to the extent to which we can increase our operating margins). At the end of the day, having the opportunity to contribute to the process of helping improve the lives of those who are less fortunate is the greatest return on an opportunity with NuVasive. Because it will be challenging and there are several great learning opportunities presented in it that could apply to future work/jobs Because NuVasive has a very strong reputation and has been a high-performer in the medical device space. Interacting directly with their engineers and executive management will undoubtedly present unique learning opportunities that are hard to come by in addition to great networking opportunities.

Required Skills:

Ability to utilize advanced mathematical software (e.g. Matlab, Mathematica) to run optimizations

Strong mathematical & analysis skill set

Preferred Skills:

Ideal output would be a computer program or spreadsheet that can be provided input variables (part dimensions and yearly sales volume) to output optimized raw material bar shape

Replace some of the existing key assemblies in the eB deliverables to use .NET Core Portable Assemblies. The eB implementation is dependent on a number of .NET Assemblies. However, a significant limitation the .NET Framework is the inability to share code across platforms. Developing this key assemblies using .NET Core will provide the system with a library which can be deployed over various platforms and which also allows developers to import just the parts of the Framework they need for their projects. These cross-platform changes need to be verified on at least, Azure Roles and one other non-windows platform (e.g. Android or iOS).

Required Skills:

C# Developer
Database knowledge
Good understanding of the Microsoft .Net 4.x Framework

Preferred Skills:

Knowledge of the .NET Core
Familiar with Azure

Develop the deliverables needed to change the current eB Pluggable Engines to Microsoft Workflow Foundation Activities. One aspect of this effort is to modernize the implementation of the “Pluggable Core Engines”. This will go further than a like for like change of the functionality.

When “Pluggable Core Engines” was initially implemented, the idea was simply to use that as a way to make the existing engines (especially Print and Render) more flexible. Since then we have come to the realization that Activities is at the core of the system with the other WCF services supporting to allow these activities to function on a remote machine. So eventually all service calls will be implemented as Activities using WF.
