Headquartered in San Diego, California, USA, Solar Turbines Incorporated, a subsidiary of Caterpillar Inc., is one of the worlds leading manufacturers of industrial gas turbines, with more than 13,400 units and over 1.4 billion operating hours in 96 countries. Products from Solar Turbines play an important role in the development of oil, natural gas and power generation projects around the world. Solar Turbines products include gas turbine engines (rated from 1590 to 30,000 horsepower), gas compressors, and gas turbine-powered compressor sets, mechanical-drive packages and generator sets (ranging from 1.1 to 22 megawatts). Solars customers put the companys products to work in many areas including production, processing and pipeline transmission of natural gas and crude oil and generation of electricity and thermal energy for processing applications, such as manufacturing chemicals, pharmaceuticals, and food products. Solars foundation is people and Solars culture is one where individual contributions are valued, diversity in the workplace is encouraged, and safety is emphasized in all aspects of the business. Solar Turbines is comprised of a dedicated and multi-talented workforce of more than 6,000 employees with decades of experience working as a global team.
Intern - Engineering Assistant
1) Compressor Anti-Surge Control Tool: Solar Turbines utilizes an Excel-based complex workbook to determine the correct valve sizing, selection, control system tuning parameters, and customer-facing documentation for compressor anti-surge recycle control systems. The existing analysis methods and the user interface provide a less than optimal result and experience. Leveraging the existing Gas Compressor Surge Control Valve Sizing Excel-based tool, the team will re-deploy the tool to a sustainable platform, while enhancing the user interface to improve workflow. The team will work with subject matter experts and internal customers to improve the usability and sustainability of the tool set. In addition, the team will refine the analysis and analysis criterion to optimize valve sizing and selection.
2) Loopback Enhancement Project: The goal of this project is to enhance the current loopback (simulation) creation tool so that it creates more useful logic for test engineers. A better tool will reduce the time spent by test engineers on creating new loopback logic to support package and BOP (Balance of Plant) related custom features.Ìý
3) SMT60 Trailer 2.0 Isolation Damper Design: Investigate/design a new curtain style damper for the SMT60 Trailer 2.0 design. The current damper design on the SMT60 is plagued with quality issues from the supplier, and the classic blade/spring design can sometimes be unreliable and require maintenance checks over time. A new curtain type design may prove to be more reliable, easier to actuate, and have improved quality in design.
4) Loopback Dynamical Simulation: Improve on the current Solar loopback testing by integrating the controllers (PLC) to power system component models (such as GT (gas turbine), generator, and loads). Discover and implement dynamical model integration with Solar loopback testing procedure. An example of that can be a customer facility (grid connect or microgrid) running threeÌýgenerator sets and a number of loads. The simulation will be built based on the customer's site information to show how solar control logic works for generator modes of operation (Isoch or droop), load sharing, load shedding and other applications, all running with the HMI screens. What-if scenarios provide stretch goal opportunities, where the simulation can show how frequency deviates, as well as other system effects.
