As a part of the Software Technology Solutions’ BD Library team, you will be exposed to many full-time multi-disciplinary team members. You will be a part of our SCRUM team and will hold/manage your own SCRUM ceremonies. Your position will include development of a web-based hosted tool that facilitates the collection, aggregation, and display of multiple data sources for curation into a single standardized library. The position will challenge you to grow your object-oriented knowledge as well as will stretch you to ensure good user interactions/experiences with the product being developed. The product currently is a database only that holds drug concepts and details and is used by many other software applications available to customers. We’re looking to make it a true application by adding a front-end for pharmacists to curate new data. The end result of this internship will be used on a daily basis by many employees.

Automating GEM Premier 5000 Diagnostics

Project Scope/Overview:
Werfen produces the GEM 5000 blood analyzer that are commonly found in intensive care units, respiratory wards, and central laboratories. The GEM 5000 analyzer provides fast accurate quantitative measurements of whole blood gases (pO2, pCO2), pH, electrolytes (Na, K, Cl and Ca), metabolites (Glucose, Lactate), CO-Oximetry (oxygen carrying state of hemoglobin in a blood specimen) on 150 µL of blood in 90 seconds.
The GEM 5000 Blood Gas Analyzer uses a disposable cartridge that contains an electrochemical sensor card and the calibration fluids required to calibrate the various sensors (Na, K, Ca, O2 etc.) on the card. The goal of the project is to develop an automated diagnostic report that uses the sensor data and event log data to inform a service personnel of the root cause of a cartridge failure and/or instrument failure. The service personnel could be a service technician on-site at the hospital or a member of the customer services team located in one of our customer services centers around the world.
The automated diagnostic report tool would be a piece of software that processes the instrument data and identify known patterns in the data that relate to common failure modes of the cartridge and/or instrument.

The project involves the various phases of a new product development as outlined below:
1. User Needs
2. Design Requirements
3. Design Output
4. Verification or User Test Cases
5. Validation

Advanced opportunities:
1. Additional diagnostic analysis to highlight data that is shifted from historical or is near failure but has not been flagged yet
2. Application of advanced data analytics/machine learning to identify abnormal performance patterns
3. Full verification of project code to allow for use in medical device field

Sponsor Background and Project Motivation:
Werfen is a leader in in vitro diagnostic testing. Werfen’s products, focused on Hemostasis and Acute Care Diagnostics, are designed to help healthcare providers enhance patient care and efficiency. Currently, more than 1.1 million patient samples are tested on Werfen systems every day. In the case of the GEM 5000 instrument, the GEM 5000 Cartridge can process up to 600 blood samples over a period of 31 days. When a GEM 5000 cartridge fails in an instrument, the instrument will be offline for at least 60 minutes while a new cartridge is installed and goes through its warmup period. For an instrument failure, the instrument could be offline for an extended period of time while the technician travels to the site and performs the repair. Having an automated diagnostic report tool will allow the technician/customer service representative to expedite the resolution of a cartridge/instrument failure. Furthermore, the automated diagnostic report tool provides a repository of diagnostic information that can be expanded over time.
